The background is their focus on research and development to achieve zero impact on the environment. St. Andrews Biological Station in Canada has documented that mussels eat sea louse! In this video we clearly see that sea lice is being pumped straight into the mussel and digested inside the mussel. The video has very good pictures and support the idea of using mussels as a environmentally friendly and cost efficient way of reducing sea louse.

As part of its own pilot project, the Åland Government has cultivated mussels on a larger scale since the summer of 2010. Now, in November 2012, these mussel have grown big, or as big as they get in the low-saline waters of the Åland archipelago, and they are ready to be harvested.
